Hoi An vs Hanoi: Which Suits Remote Workers Better?

1 min read

Hoi an vs hanoi is the most-asked question in Vietnam digital nomad groups, and the honest answer is "it depends what you need from a base." Both work; the trade-offs are dramatic.

Internet

Hanoi wins on raw speed: gigabit fibre in nearly every district, 5G coverage that's actually fast, plenty of coworking spaces with redundant uplinks. Hoi An is "good enough" — 200-400 Mbps in most rentals, but service incidents happen during typhoon season and recovery is slower than in Hanoi.

Cost

Hoi An is meaningfully cheaper. A modern one-bed walking distance to old town is $400-600/month; equivalent in Hanoi's expat-popular Tay Ho or Ba Dinh is $600-900. Eating out is roughly half-price in Hoi An. Hanoi has more high-end options if you want a flat with a doorman and a pool.

Food

This is closer than Hanoians want to admit. Hoi An's central dish density is unbeatable — cao lau, com ga, banh mi Phuong, banh xeo, all within walking distance. Hanoi has more breadth (international, Korean, Japanese, modern Vietnamese fine dining) but less hit rate per kilometre.

Weather

Hoi An gets meaningfully wet October-December and seriously hot June-August. Hanoi is brutally cold in January-February (8-12°C with no central heating in most rentals — bring layers) and humid May-July. Neither is "always pleasant"; pick your discomfort.

Verdict

If you're staying one month: Hoi An, no contest. Three months: Hanoi if you need community and venue variety, Hoi An if you want focused work time. Six months: alternate.
