MagicJohn iPad Pro Magnetic Folio: Smart Folio Without Apple Tax
Pros
- Magnetic attachment matches Apple Smart Folio strength
- Pencil 2 charges through the spine without removal
- Sleep/wake works on first try every time
Cons
- Adds visible bezel — larger overall footprint
- No keyboard cutout for Magic Keyboard
The MagicJohn ipad pro magnetic folio is the third-party folio that finally gets the boring details right: magnetic attachment lines up on the first try, sleep/wake works every time, and Apple Pencil 2 charges through the spine without you having to remove the cover.
What we tested
Three weeks on an iPad Pro 13-inch (M5), measuring magnetic attachment force vs. Apple's own Smart Folio (within 5%), counting sleep/wake misfires (zero in three weeks), and checking Pencil 2 charge behaviour with the cover both open and closed.
Build & feel
The interior microfibre is plush and consistent — no glue residue, no thread shedding. The exterior is a textured polyurethane that reads as "premium synthetic" rather than fake leather. Two stand angles (typing and viewing) feel stable on a wooden desk; the typing angle is shallower than Smart Folio, which is closer to ideal for long sessions.
Pencil and keyboard
Pencil 2 attaches to the magnetic strip and charges normally with the folio closed. We didn't see the case interfere with Pencil pressure or palm rejection in any of our drawing tests. There's no Magic Keyboard cutout — if you use the Magic Keyboard, this folio isn't compatible.
Who it's for
iPad Pro users who want a Smart Folio at less than half the price. If you live in the Magic Keyboard, skip this and use Apple's Smart Folio with the keyboard.
