Magnetic Camera Lens Protectors: Aluminium Rings That Actually Stick

8.8 / 102 min read

Pros

  • Aircraft-grade aluminium ring resists scuffs
  • Magnetic mount is strong enough for everyday use
  • Swappable for cleaning without re-aligning

Cons

  • Slight vignetting at the widest aperture

The MagicJohn magnetic lens protector set replaces the usual stick-on lens shields with aircraft-grade aluminium rings that snap onto the camera island via internal magnets. After two weeks of swapping them on and off, the magnet has not weakened and alignment is exact every time.

What we tested

Two weeks of pocket carry alongside keys, daily on/off cycles to test magnet retention, and a 30-shot photo set under controlled lighting to compare with-and-without optical performance. We also ran a deliberate "drop the protector" test to see whether the rings dislodge if the phone takes a knock.

Optical performance

Image quality is the obvious risk for any lens accessory. Our test shots show no vignetting at the standard apertures iPhone 17 Pro Max defaults to in Auto, and only a faint vignette at the widest aperture in Night Mode — not enough to spot in normal viewing. Flare control is similar to the bare lens; the optical glass insert is uncoated but high-clarity.

Living with it

The biggest practical win is cleanability: pop the rings off, wipe both surfaces, snap them back. No alignment dance, no peeled adhesive residue. The magnetic retention is strong enough that we never had a ring fall off in pocket, and didn't dislodge when we deliberately dropped a protector-fitted phone from desk height.

Who it's for

Anyone who carries their phone in pockets with keys, or who sets it lens-down on textured surfaces. The protector takes the wear so the lens never does. If you change cases often this is also significantly easier than re-applying adhesive shields each time.
